CAPC Corps Youth Investment Center

The Youth Investment Center (YIC) program served over 404 youth for 30 or more days, including 134 foster youth, in the 2005-06 program year. Program referrals are provided by the Grant Joint Union School District and services are provided at junior high and high schools in the Del Paso Heights neighborhood. CAPC Corps members recruit and train volunteer mentors to work one-on-one with youth in a variety of capacities.

The focus of the Youth Investment Center is life readiness. CAPC Corps members provide youth with a variety of age appropriate “life readiness” services depending on individual needs. Individual needs will be determined through assessment via an AmeriCorps member assisted self-survey. Services provided by AmeriCorps members will include the seven domains assessed in the Ansell-Casey Life Skills Assessment. For participants ages 13-15, service domains will include the communication skills, daily living skills, housing and money management skills, self care skills, social relationship skills, work and study skills, and civic engagement skills. For participants ages 16-18, service domains will include career planning skills, daily living skills, housing and money management skills, self care skills, social relationship skills, work and study skills, and civic engagement skills.

Youth Investment Center partners include the Mutual Assistance Network and United Way. Funding from the California Corrections Standards Authority (formerly Board of Corrections) is also being utilized to support YIC.

YIC Performance Measures:
  • 500 youth core participants (youth receiving program services for 30 or more days) will participate in life skills workshops;
  • 90% of 100 foster youth core participants will self-report an improvement in 3 of 5 life skills domains (11-12 year olds) or 4 of 6 life skills domains (13-19 year olds);
  • 90% of foster youth core participants will demonstrate improvement in 3 of 5 life skills domains (11-12 year olds) or 4 of 6 life skills domains (13-19 year olds) as reported by AmeriCorps members;
  • 28 AmeriCorps members will receive training in and demonstrate their knowledge about guiding and supporting youth.
  • Volunteer Recruitment Coordinators will recruit, train, and support both short term and long term volunteers who will provide activities for and/or mentor youth.
